first Half Day at GSFC
Today I began the transistin to GSFC. I spent the afternoon at GSFC new office S204 Blding 11. Had first meeting with Vern Weyers to discuss commercialization study. This is not an official transfer. The office is jammed with junk from the previous resident. Al Sherman promised to have it cleaned out. Plan to transistion over the course of this week. then start spending almost all time at GSFC.
August 30, 1996-------> Move to Goddard
Next week I begin a transition to the Goddard Research Center. After 20 years at NASA HQ this is a big move for me. It should also be a great adventure. This move resulted from NASA downsizing. They identified 41 Senior Executives that were surplus. In the Office of Space Acess and Technology there were 16 out of 20 identified. They also abolished the Office. NASA has said that they will transfer all SES folks to some center. Naturally everyone wanted to find a place that they wanted to go rather than rather than be place somewhere at the discretion of whoever makes these global decisions. I was lucky to find a job at Goddard. They felt that they wanted to place more emphasis on Technology Transfer to Commercial Apllications. This includes SBIR, new technology reporting and patents and licenses. I'll be in the Engineering Directorate. My first assignment is to investigate GSFC processes and make some recommendations. Next week begins the transition.
August 28, 1996------> Hilary moved in to stay while she is going to school at GMU. Moved her bed in and helped unload her possessions.
Episode 1 ---> August 26, 1996 Trucking Household Possessions
This past weekend Bonnie and I delivered Eleanor Hudson's household possessions to some of her grandchildren. We rented a truck in Virginia. Loaded it with somethings that we wanted to take to Kendra -- a recovered sectional and Scott's old computer. We were also taking Scott back to college so we had him and his suit cases along for the first couple legs of the trip. We got to Ohio in the afternoon about 5:30. The Pennsylvania Turnpike was very rough and we got jiggled up pretty badly. We met David and Scott Hudson at Eleanor's Home and loaded all of Hilary's and Whitney's items in the truck and took them to storage just down Bagley Rd. in Berea. Then we loaded up the truck again with Rhett's, Scott's, Kendra's items and a few things that go back home to Northern Virginia. On Friday Morning we left for Blacksburg. We unloaded Rhett's and Scott's stuff at the apartment they are sharing. We also helped Scott setup his room. The next day we left for Durham. We unloaded Kendra's items. We were very worried that the computer would be damaged because of all the vibration in the truck, but Mark set it up and checked it out. We had a nice evening and dinner with Kendra and Mark; and the next morning we headed North. We met Hilary in Richmond and picked up her mattresses. Hilary is going to stay with us while she works on her Masters Degree at George Mason. Then on back home from Richmond arriving at 3:30. We unpacked and took the truck back.
